Rosario, Cavite – Solidarity of Cavite Workers
(SCW), an alliance of workers in the province of Cavite, celebrated its 18th
anniversary on April 26, 2015 through a fun run.
The fun run received positive reactions from
folks across the town because the group also joined the campaign to implement a
national minimum wage for workers and employees in both public and private sector
amounting to 16,000PhP a month aside calling for President Aquino’s ouster.
More than 100 individuals composed mainly of
members and officers of unions, individual members of SCW, and local members
from the urban poor organization joined the event.
Participants traversed more than eight
kilometers of densely populated town which started at the neighboring town
Noveleta from 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning.
The group ran along the street of Marseilla to
Casa Hacienda of Tejeros Convention village. The run continued along the stretch
of the villages of Wawa and ended in Sapa 1.
All participants wore red or blue shirts where
sheets bearing the call for PNoy’s ouster and increase wages were pinned.
Eight stops were designated along the agreed
route. In each of the stops, labor and urban poor leaders took turns to propagate
the stand on their particular issues.
Women workers, who were the majority of the
participants, also staged their One Billion Rising groove in certain stops of
the route.
Because of the positive reaction from the
people, SCW entertained the idea of organizing another similar activity with
the participation of local public employees to push harder the campaign for a
national minimum wage.
After the activity, the group enjoyed a small
feast to cap SCW’s 18th anniversary celebration.
